The WHISH trial is the first RCT with the statistical power needed to test whether increasing physical activity (PA) and decreasing sitting, can reduce major cardiac events (heart attacks, stroke and cardiovascular deaths) in older women. WHISH, a pragmatic trial embedded in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), is a large multi-racial/ethnic geographically diverse cohort of 49,000 women, who were randomized to an intervention based on current national recommendations for physical activity for older adults.
